Dewey, the father of Grand Canyon
University head coach Russ Pennell,
recently retired after serving 47
years as a high school coach in
Kansas, Missouri and Arkansas, most
recently at Little Rock Christian
Academy. He captured a state
championship in 2005, was the state
runner-up in 2006 and won conference
championships in each of his last
four seasons in Little Rock.
In 2009 Coach Pennell served as
the basketball operations director
at the University of Arizona for his
son Russ Pennell, who was the
interim head coach. Coach
Dewey helped lead the U of A
Wildcats to the sweet 16.
Last summer Coach Dewey Pennell
took over as the Arizona Premier 17
Elite team head coach.
Immediately the team responding to
his coaching style and philosophies
and they traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma
and won the Mullen's High Profile
tournament. To end the club
season off with the bang, Coach
Dewey lead the Premier 17 Elite team
to a final four finish in the
prestigious Duel of the Desert
tournament.
Coach Dewey truly is a coaching
legend and his basketball mind and
coaching style is something to be
admired. "He is the best coach
that I have ever had the privilege
of working with. I have no
issues publicly stating that he is
the best coach in the state."
Arizona Premier feels very lucky to
have a coach with Pennell's
credentials and talent.
He has a bachelor's degree in
education from Missouri State
University (1960), a master's from
the University of Missouri (1970)
and a Ph.D. from the University of
Arkansas (1991).
